Collective responsibility in waste management

The company ZEOS is the only national non-profit organisation with the purpose of organising and fulfilling obligations related to waste electrical and electronic (EE) equipment management for producers and importers. It was established in July 2005 and is managed by the Director mag. Emil Šehič.

The obligations that fundamentally arise from European directives relate to waste EE equipment collection all over the country and to the provision of appropriate treatment and further recovery. This waste includes refrigerators, TV sets, monitors, energy saving and fluorescent luminaries, which cannot be processed in Slovenia, so the company ZEOS executes this part of the process abroad, predominantly in Germany. However, this requires additional funds for logistics and treatment. In two years of operation, the company managed to fully comply with the conditions imposed on their contractors by Slovenian and European legislation.

Over 1,500 tons of environmentally-damaging EE equipment has already been collected.

The company ZEOS, d.o.o., established in July 2005 by the leading Slovenian companies in the area of electrical and electronic (EE) equipment, started collecting and recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment in February 2007.

Until September of this year, they have collected over 1,500 tons of equipment and provided for its appropriate recovery and safe disposal both in Slovenia and abroad. The main objective of the company ZEOS is to take all measures to provide for the appropriate recycling and removal of waste electrical and electronic equipment in a safe and environmentally - and human friendly manner.

The Environmental Agency appeals for the correct storage of discarded refrigerators containing gases harmful to the ozone layer.

In the middle of October, the Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia finished a month-long nationwide initiative called "What to Do with the Old One", which was aimed at raising the public awareness that waste electrical and electronic equipment should be disposed of at a proper location and in the correct manner. The initiative was focused on refrigerators, which represent an important potential source of ozone layer degradation. The agency, who paid 28,000 EUR for the initiative, estimates that the consumers' response was considerable.

Joint Scheme for Electrical and Electronic Equipment Management

Regarding business and economy, we are constantly confronted with numerous changes and new contributions to the legislation, both Slovenian and European.

The turbulence of constant environmental changes requires economists and entrepreneurs to be rather flexible and ready to respond quickly, but following and adapting to constantly new regulations can also be burdening for companies. In accordance with the adopted regulations in this area, Slovenia will have to collect 4 kg of waste electrical and electronic (EE) equipment per inhabitant in the year 2007. In relation to waste electrical and electronic (EE) equipment management, the Ministry for the Environment and Spatial Planning has decided that so far they do not intend to grant a concession for the provision of this public service but to encourage the liable parties to connect and establish collective systems.
