The Role of ZEOS

💚 ZEOS is Slovenia’s leading company for the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment. It was established in 2005 by producers who joined forces to meet their extended producer responsibility obligations. Today, we manage four compliance schemes – for e-waste, portable batteries and accumulators, waste grave candles, and industrial batteries.

💚 We work with more than 800 producers from Slovenia and 130 from abroad, connecting key stakeholders: collectors, transporters, treatment facilities, and public services. In addition, in 2012 we established a subsidiary in Bosnia and Herzegovina and continue actively sharing best practices.

💚 Our vision goes beyond legislation – we co-create European guidelines, are members of international associations (WEEE Forum, EucoLight), and carry out projects that improve waste management systems. Through public awareness and collaboration, we build a sustainable future.

Collection Network

💚 Since the very beginning, ZEOS has been building a stable and consumer-friendly waste collection network, which is essential for effective separate collection. Today, we operate more than 2,000 locations across Slovenia for the drop-off of e-waste, batteries, accumulators, and grave candles. We continuously expand the network with street collection containers, green corners in shops and schools, and mobile collection units for field activities.

💚 We collect waste from collectors, public services, and provide direct pick-ups for companies. At collection centres, we have set up reuse corners where appliances are given a second life. The collected waste is treated safely: first, hazardous components (batteries, capacitors, oils) are removed, and then materials (plastic, metal) are mechanically separated for reuse.

💚 Every appliance, battery, or candle returned for recycling represents a step towards a cleaner environment.

Collected quantities

💚 Every year, tons of e-waste are generated in Slovenia, and despite the available options for proper handling, a portion still ends up mixed with household waste or illegally dumped. The average household owns as many as 74 electronic devices, many of which are no longer in use. Due to rapid technological progress, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter, increasing the gap between the amount of equipment placed on the market and the e-waste collected — a major challenge for reaching the EU target of 65% separately collected e-waste.

💚 ZEOS ensures two-thirds of all properly collected e-waste in Slovenia and also collects batteries, accumulators, and grave candles. Over 18 years, we have collected more than 145 million kg of waste, enough to fill 6,700 freight wagons, and reduced CO₂ emissions by more than 800,000 tons — equivalent to 22,222 football fields of Aleppo pine forests.

💚 Since e-waste contains valuable materials and hazardous components, responsible handling is essential: proper sorting and handing over to the formal collection network.

Our Projects

💚 In addition to its core activities of managing e-waste, batteries, accumulators, and grave candles, ZEOS is involved in numerous projects that strengthen the collection network and raise awareness. As the main coordinator, we have implemented three LIFE projects, co‑funded by the EU and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy of the Republic of Slovenia:

Life Slovenia WEEE campaign

Raising awareness among households and schools about proper e-waste management.
We created the E-transformer vehicle and carried out 235 events.

Life E-waste management

Establishing a consumer‑friendly collection network (street collection containers, green corners, mobile collection) and conducting more than 360 awareness‑raising activities.

Life Turn to e-circle

Promoting the circular economy – sharing, repairs, and reuse of appliances.
We carried out 420 activities, set up new locations, upgraded E-transformer 2.0, and produced 100 educational videos under the series Sure you can.
